I am assuming you are referring to your previous operating system's password, not the PC's CMOS password.

You can do what I do & instead of re-using an old HDD simply buy a 512GB Internal PC SSD for $30 from Amazon & install a new operating system on it.

However, if you need to use the HDD from your laptop, if you can't find out what the password was, you will have to delete the old & reinstall a new operating system on it (or at least re-format it) to use it at all anyway.

How I do so: Download a version of PuppyLinux .iso file, get a 8GB or larger USB, make a boot-able USB drive using an Image Writer, go into Setup of your personal computer to boot from USB drive, When PuppyLinux loads go to System > GParted to select the HDD and delete the Partition. Then create New Partition & Format (NTFS for Windows, ext4 for Linux).

That's as much as I can give you in a relatively short description.

Hope this helps.

This is a hard drive password - it's in the firmware. You aren't getting into that drive, most likely - it's cooked. Now that said, you can try and erase it in a USB drive dock and do an ATA Secure Erase which sometimes removes these passwords, but it doesn't always work out in the end and it's not a guaranteed fix; but 8/10 times, it will - except SEDs. SEDs are setup such they're FUBAR with this.

Get a copy of Parted Magic (Sub or one time is fine, just different terms) and put that drive on a USB drive dock like this and then erase it using this guide: Diagnosing and Erasing Hard Drives
